UVA conducts diabetes research focusing on body movement

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – UVA experts are testing different methods in a program to help people with type 2 diabetes.

They are trying to find approaches that don't require weight loss or medication.

Some experts say the first thing they teach diabetics is how to lower their blood sugar levels through exercise.

“Anyone can lower their blood sugar levels through skeletal muscle contraction, basically movement,” said Dr. Daniel Cox, a UVA professor and psychiatrist. “The more we move, the more glucose our muscles take in, independent of insulin.”

This is a six-week program, and patients are given a Fitbit.
