Another day in Diabethesville

My type 1 friend who has had it for over 30 years emailed me this morning:

“I went to skim with my class (Qigong) in Avra because I had made an appointment with the doctor and then missed the gym yesterday and then went to the gym and missed it, so I went to skim with Avra's class (Qigong). But I swapped my dex G7 in the morning, which changed me high and gave me insulin I didn't want my control IQ… Recently, I put collagen powder in my coffee this morning.

My friend wears a pump and a CGM. She is educated and has extensive experience with diabetes. She is a health coach and former peer leader. Still, she went to Diabetesville.

You know that, you were there. A place where suddenly you realize that things don't realize they should. Nothing seems to make sense. The fix you made doesn't seem to work…until then…and at the end… all your efforts will bring you home from Diabethesville.

What causes the first hiccup? who knows? What contributed to the chaos that followed? You cannot check the clues. What can I learn from now on? there is nothing. It's just another day in Diabethesville. Things don't go according to the plan and don't know why. You wouldn't have been able to stop it because you didn't know it was happening until it was too late.

I've been in type 1 diabetes for 53 years and the train still drops me there. Once a week…once a month… whenever I don't expect it. Of course, that must be the case. For me, it was a week before visiting a friend in New Jersey.

Don't worry. If you miss seeing or doing while you're in Diabethesville, you'll come back.
