Berlin Senior Center to host free diabetes prevention program | News

BERLIN — A free, 12-week health program focused on preventing diabetes and improving overall wellness will be offered this spring at the Berlin Senior Center.

The program is open to adults of all ages and is not limited to Berlin residents. There is no residency requirement to participate.

The program, “Path to Wellness: Preventing Diabetes and Embracing Health,” is based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. It is designed for adults who want to lower their risk of diabetes and other chronic illnesses, as well as for those who have already been diagnosed with diabetes and want to better manage their health.

“This class was a hit last spring at the Rocky Hill Senior Center. Thanks to the Friends of the Berlin VNA, it’s open to everyone,” a Central Connecticut Health District spokesperson said.

The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Berlin Visiting Nurse Association and is offered at no cost to participants.

Classes will be held on Fridays from 1 to 2:30 p.m., beginning March 20 and running through June 12. There will be no class April 3. Sessions will take place in the craft room at the Berlin Senior Center, at 33 Colonial Dr.

The course will focus on making small, realistic changes over time to support long-term health. Topics include increasing physical activity, making healthier food choices at home and on the go, and managing stress. The program also encourages participants to stay motivated and seek support as they work toward their goals.

As part of the program, participants will have access to free, voluntary Hemoglobin A1C screenings. This test helps measure average blood sugar levels and is commonly used to assess diabetes risk and to manage diabetes.

Organizers say the program is meant to provide education, support and practical tools to help people make healthier choices and reduce the risk of serious health problems linked to uncontrolled diabetes.

Advance registration is required. Residents interested in signing up or learning more about the program can call 860-785-8380, Ext. 216.
