Coastal Health District, Effingham YMCA to launch diabetes support group in Rincon

RINCON, Ga. (WTOC) – Living with diabetes can feel like a daily balancing act , from meals and medications to stress and sleep. A new community group in Effingham County aims to make that work a little less isolating.

The Coastal Health District, partnering with the Effingham YMCA, is launching a Diabetes Support Group to provide education, resources and peer support for adults 18 and older living with diabetes. The group is open to both Effingham YMCA members and non-members.

The first meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, from 5-6 p.m. at the Effingham YMCA, 1224 Patriot Dr., Rincon. Sessions will include diabetes education and guest speakers, organizers said.

Meetings are planned for the second and fourth Monday of each month at the same time and location. Tentative upcoming dates are:

Feb. 9 and Feb. 23March 9 and March 23April 13 and April 27May 11 and May 25June 8 and June 22July 13 and July 27

Diabetes is a chronic condition that increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce insulin, while Type 2 diabetes develops when the body cannot properly use insulin. Most cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented through weight loss, healthy eating and regular physical activity.
