Consuming Citrus And Grape Supplements May Lower Blood Sugar Levels, Study Says

To control sudden spikes of glucose levels during this cold season, a team of Italian researchers share that consuming food supplements containing citrus and red grape extract, may show a significant result in maintaining a healthy blood sugar level.

As the winter season gradually sets in, it is important for people with high blood sugar to take care of their health, as the cold weather may negatively impact their diabetes levels.

Managing High Blood Sugar Level In Winter

To control sudden spikes of glucose levels during this cold season, a team of Italian researchers share that consuming food supplements containing citrus and red grape extract may show a significant result in maintaining a healthy blood sugar level.

The study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition revealed that 60 participants between the ages of 18 and 75 were examined, all of whom had slightly higher to normal fasting blood sugar. In the first place, the participants were divided into two groups, and one party received a daily supplement containing lemon grape extract, hesperidin and 250 g of chromium. When the other group received a placebo.

Consuming Citrus And Grape Extracts Lowered Fasting Blood Glucose

Six months after the examination, participants with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes, who received supplements, showed a significant improvement. The fasting blood glucose of this group dropped from 114 mg/dL to 94 mg/dL. Participants who were under placebo showed a small reduction in fasting blood glucose, i.e from 113 to 107 mg/dL.

Impact On Cholesterol Level

The findings further revealed that the lemon grape extract had a positive impact in lowering bad cholesterol (LDL), while raising good cholesterol (HDL) and improving triglyceride levels.

Through this study, the Italian researchers claim that combining this supplement with a healthy diet can play a crucial role in preventing type 2 diabetes in people with pre-diabetes. Although a larger study is required to confirm the results.

Symptoms Of Type 2 Diabetes: From Weight Loss To Skin Darkening

Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition in which your body cannot use insulin sufficiently and sugar builds up in the blood. Healthcare professionals claim that a lot of people with this chronic disease can live for years and not know it. However, when the symptoms appear, they typically include:

Frequent urinationThirstyHungerFatigueWeight lossBlurred visionFrequent infectionSlow-healing woundsTingling or numbness in the hands or feetSkin darkening around the armpit and neck

Treatment For Type 2 Diabetes: Diabetes Education & Lifestyle Changes

The best way to diagnose diabetes is by consulting a doctor and taking certain tests under professional care. Healthcare providers recommend that diabetes education is a crucial part of managing the chronic disease, apart from lifestyle changes which are essential.

“Impaired fasting glycemia (IFG) puts carriers at a significantly higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” the Italian researchers in the study state.

“Lifestyle changes, such as increased physical activity and a healthy diet rich in fiber and low in sugar, can often reverse prediabetes and significantly reduce the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes metabolic disorders, especially diabetes.”
