Dash diet changed for diabetes reduces blood sugar levels


A modified version of the dietary approach to stop the diet of hypertension (DASH) is effective in lowering glucose in adults with type 2 diabetes, according to a study published online on Nature Medicine.

Dr. Michael Fan, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and his colleagues conducted a crossover trial in which 89 adults with type 2 diabetes were assigned to four equal-calf diets in a random order. 2,000 kcal) mg/day in sodium, lasts 5 weeks each.

The researchers found that Dash4D (comparative) diet significantly reduced mean glucose (mean difference, -11.1 mg/dl) and increased time in range (mean difference, +5.2 percentage points). There was no effect on the coefficient of variation. For secondary outcomes, the time spent with glucose standard deviation and hyperglycemia (glucose >180 mg/dl and >250 mg/dl) was lower on the Dash4D diet. However, the time spent with hypoglycemia (glucose <70 mg/dL and <54 mg/dL) was similar throughout the diet. No significant adverse events related to continuous glucose monitoring or study diet have been reported.

“The original dash diet has long been recommended for people with diabetes and other health conditions because of its effectiveness in lowering blood pressure, but this is the first time that it has shown a significant improvement in glucose control,” said Dr. Elizabeth Selvin of Johns Hopkins.
