Hannibal Regional Hospital supports diabetes awareness with educational fair and free screenings

QUINCY (WGEM) – The Hannibal Regional Hospital honors Diabetes Awareness Month by holding its second educational awareness fair.

The fair offered help with several booths offering educational resources to help support mental and physical health, such as dietary information, hygiene and even ways to prevent your prediabetes from becoming a greater issue.

Hannibal Regional offers a variety of self-management and educational training for diabetes, with several Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES). Jamie Cook, Olivia Rees and Kristy Taylor all look to help not only those with diabetes make better decisions, but help those who are not affected by the disease with preventative measures.

“We are offering free hemoglobin A1C testing and what that is is it tells us your three month blood sugar average,” said Taylor. “So, we will be mailing out those results and they’ll also be able to view them on our MyChart messaging system and that will let someone know if they are at risk for diabetes and to check in with their provider from there.”

Hannibal Regional Hospital offers free quarterly educational courses as well as monthly support groups. Free A1C hemoglobin testing was also available during the fair, where results will be mailed to participants or they can view the results in the MyChart portal.

The American Diabetes Association report that nearly one in two Americans have diabetes or prediabetes.
