Living Healthy: Embolization is a minimally invasive and less painful procedure to treat hemorrhoids

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) – Embolization is an innovative option to treat internal hemorrhoids that avoids surgery.

News Channel 3 talked with Dr. Sonny Bagla with IR Centers at Urologic Institute in Palm Springs.

Dr. Bagla says you should realize everyone is born with hemorrhoids, but they typically don’t bother us.

He adds that they serve a purpose, but the problem starts when hemorrhoids grow over time. That can happen for many reasons, including aging, diet, and even stress.

Dr. Bagla explains the hemorrhoid embolization process as, “a minimally invasive procedure, where we put this small spaghetti size catheter into the blood vessels that supply the hemorrhoids.  So we don’t go through the rectum or the anus, we actually go through a small blood vessel in top of the leg, and into the blood vessels that supply the hemorrhoids.”

Dr. Bagla goes on to say that when blood flow is decreased, symptoms usually get better over time. Once again, a procedure that is minimally invasive and a less painful recovery.
