VSP Premier Edge and Western University of Health Sciences Launch New Virtual Diabetes Education Event

Rancho Cordova, California — VSP Premier Edge Training and Educationhas partnered with Western University of Health Sciences to develop a new Virtual Diabetes Awareness Event This course teaches you how to best provide comprehensive care for people with diabetes. The course integrates four different disciplines: optometry, pharmacy, podiatry, and dentistry, focusing on an interprofessional approach to diabetic patient care. This free course is eligible for 2 COPE-accredited continuing education (CE) credits.

“More than 38 million people in the United States have diabetes, and 1.2 million are diagnosed each year, so it is important to have a holistic approach to caring for people living with this disease,” said Dr. Valerie Seety Pilon, vice president of clinical and medical affairs at VSP Vision. “As a health-focused vision care company, VSP Vision is offering this multidisciplinary educational opportunity to highlight the importance of eye care for people with diabetes.”

This course, taught by Loretta Ng, OD, FAAO, Preeti Kotha, PharmD, Chandler Paige Hubbard, DPM, and Dalia Seleem, DDS, PhD, will cover:

  • We review interprofessional care based on the National Diabetes Education Program's (NDEP) “Working Together to Manage Diabetes: A Toolkit for Pharmacy, Podiatry, Optometry, and Dentistry (PPOD),” developed with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Panelists will provide insight into common diabetes conditions they treat and believe are important in managing people with diabetes.
  • It will consider the pathological effects of diabetes on various systems of the body, the clinical impact, and complications of uncontrolled diabetes, and suggest ways to best provide comprehensive care.
  • We recommend potential changes to achieve comprehensive diabetes management in clinical practice.
