12-year-old girl dies from diabetes complications, parents sued

Authorities in Indiana have arrested a couple more than a month after their daughter was found dead on her bedroom floor.

Her parents, Ashley Bredhold and Brent Bredhold, were arrested on Wednesday, August 7, on charges of child neglect, according to online case information viewed by PEOPLE.

According to reports, the coroner determined that Alice died from complications related to diabetes: Her liver was more than twice the size of an adult woman's, and her blood sugar levels were four to eight times higher. The average for someone her ageAccording to Courier & Press.

Authorities allege the lack of attention to Alice's welfare went on for months.

According to unspecified court records cited by the court: Courier & Press According to police statements cited by WIBC and 14News, Alice's school claimed to child welfare services that Alice's blood sugar levels had been extremely high on multiple occasions.

The school nurse allegedly claimed high blood sugar levels were a “chronic problem.” Courier & Press.

At one point, the nurse reported that Alice's blood sugar was at a “life-threatening” level, according to the nurse's complaint filed with police and in court. Courier & Press WEVV reported.

Investigators say Alice had come to school with high blood sugar 34 times since January. Courier & Press Reported.

In an interview, Ashley said she sent her son off to wake Alice up on the afternoon of the Fourth of July. He found her lying unconscious on the floor.WEVV reported, citing a police report.

The mother told investigators she checked on her daughter two hours later, and after noticing her blood sugar was “very high,” she gave her medication but waited another two hours before calling 911, according to the police report.

When police arrived on scene, they claim the home was infested with bugs and trash bags were strewn around the area, according to 14News, WEVV and police reports. Courier & PressPolice said two other children were also removed from the home.

Ashley and Brent were taken into custody Wednesday after a month-long investigation and each charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, according to online records from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office.

They are being held on $100,000 bail each, records show. It was not immediately clear whether they had pleaded guilty. Attorney information was not listed in online charging records.
