Cedar Lane School Receives Funding from Northern Virginia Community Foundation

An after-school boxing program in Fairfax County schools recently received a grant through the Community Foundation of Northern Virginia’s 2024 Healthy Kids initiative.

Cedar Lane School received a grant to ensure members of the school's boxing club have a nutritious meal before traveling off-campus to take part in weekly after-school club activities.

Over 14 years, the Healthy Kids Grants initiative has awarded more than $200,000 to support healthy lifestyles through increased physical activity, balanced nutrition and positive mental health practices.

Schools in Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William counties, as well as the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church, were also awarded grants of up to $2,000.

At Smart's Mill Middle School in Loudon, funding will support a mental health “Zen Den” sensory environment with dim lighting, calming sounds and music and comfortable seating.

“We're so grateful for the help they've given us,” said Devon Basco, Smart Middle School student. “We can't wait for this space to be up and running so our teachers can better guide our students as they participate in online learning and so our students can practice healthy coping skills.”
