The Board of Supervisors accepted a $2.3 million grant from the California Department of Public Health to support healthy living education and programming in under-resourced areas throughout the region.

Funds from the program, called CalFresh Healthy Living, will support a variety of projects. These include improving physical education programs in at least five school districts, building community gardens, and recruiting and training residents to advocate for public policy changes to improve neighborhoods, transportation, and activities that promote active lifestyles. This is the 5th cycle CalFresh Healthy Living ProgramThe program focuses on areas where 50% or more of households have incomes below 200% of the federal poverty level.

The goal of this program is to help people enrolled in or eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) make healthy food choices and live a physically active lifestyle. , to be able to reduce health risks in the long term.

San Diego County's SNAP is called CalFresh. More than 402,000 people have registered as of September 2024, an increase of nearly 6% over last year.
