British Prime Minister Starmer meets King of Brunei in London

LONDON (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called on the country's regulators, including financial and competition watchdogs, to remove barriers to growth to help revive the struggling economy, Sky News reported. It was reported on Saturday.

Mr Starmer on Tuesday wrote to more than 10 regulators, including the Financial Conduct Authority, the Competition and Markets Authority and the energy and water regulators Ofgem and Ofwat, to give them action to boost growth by mid-January, according to Sky news agency. He asked Downing Street to present it.

The newspaper quoted one of the recipients of the letter, which was also signed by Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, as saying the direction was clear, prioritizing economic growth and investment.

Mr Skye said the Financial Reporting Council, media regulator Ofcom, the Environment Agency and the healthcare regulator had also received letters.

Downing Street did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Official figures last week showed Britain's economy failed to grow in the first three months of Starmer's new government, adding to signs of a slowdown.

Business groups also said the government's Oct. 30 tax hike budget will make it harder for businesses to invest and hire workers in the short term.
