In commemoration of Diabetes Awareness Month this November, Vandalia Health's Monthly Health System provider is raising awareness, providing education, and providing accessible services for the prevention and management of the disease. We are tackling the diabetes crisis in Virginia and surrounding areas.
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) reports that nearly 16% of adults in West Virginia have diabetes, and many more are at risk due to conditions such as obesity and prediabetes.
Mon Health primary care providers play a vital role in diabetes screening by identifying at-risk patients and developing personalized care plans. Through regular testing and preventive care, we ensure that patients have the support they need to make meaningful changes that reduce their risk of developing diabetes and its complications.
“We want to reduce the impact of diabetes in our communities and achieve the absolute best outcomes for our patients. The way we achieve this at Mon Health is through prevention, early detection, education and ongoing Through support,” said Dr. Bonnie Forman, a primary care physician at Mon Health Preston Primary Care in Kingwood. “We encourage West Virginians to take the first step in diabetes prevention by making an appointment with their health care provider to discuss their risk factors.”
In addition to primary care, Mon Health Medical Center's Diabetes Learning Center, located in its new location at Mon Health Medical Park in Morgantown, offers a wide range of diabetes care services for both prevention and long-term disease management, including: We provide.
- Diabetes self-management education: This ADA-certified program provides patients with the knowledge and tools to effectively manage diabetes. This includes lifestyle changes, medication compliance, and education on how to monitor blood sugar levels.
- Medical nutritional therapy: Led by Dr. Dennis Giroux, Diabetes Educator at Mon Health Medical Center, the service provides patients with customized meal plans to help them control their blood sugar levels through a balanced diet tailored to their individual health needs. Helpful.
- National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP): This CDC-approved program targets people at risk for type 2 diabetes and provides guidance on healthier lifestyle choices to prevent the disease. The program includes workshops focused on nutrition, physical activity, and weight management.
- Outreach and support: Mon Health providers are also committed to community engagement, offering free diabetes testing, support groups, and educational workshops to raise awareness about diabetes risks and empower individuals to take control of their health. That's what I'm trying to do. Vandalia Health's Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital hosts monthly meetings of its diabetes education and support group. Sponsored by the Preston County Health Department, the group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the hospital's conference room.
“If you are newly diagnosed with type 2 or type 1 diabetes, or prediabetes, know that small steps toward a healthier lifestyle can make a difference,” Giroux says. “Managing blood sugar levels doesn't mean perfection. It means progress. Simple changes like choosing the right foods, staying active, and prioritizing self-care can be powerful tools. wants patients to know that they are not alone on this journey and that with the right support, they can take control of their health one day at a time.”
For diabetic patients who require specialized care for chronic wounds, Mon Health Wound Care offers cutting-edge treatments such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO). HBO helps wounds heal by supplying concentrated oxygen to the bloodstream, increasing circulation, promoting tissue repair, and reducing the risk of infection.
