Healthy Living: Telemedicine to the rescue! | Lifestyle

and othersThings happen in life. You might not be able to make it to your scheduled appointment at the health center. You can't find a babysitter, your car won't start, your work schedule changes, etc. You might think your only option is to cancel or reschedule your in-person appointment over the phone.

But there's another option: telehealth appointments.

The most common form of telehealth is called a “virtual visit.” It's very similar to an in-person visit, except it's a secure video call with your healthcare provider. Unlike programs like FaceTime, this video call takes place over a confidential internet connection designed specifically for you and your healthcare provider.

Today, virtual visits can be a great alternative for many types of care. Medical, dental and behavioral health appointments can all be done through telehealth.

A virtual visit with a healthcare provider requires a smartphone (or laptop), an internet connection, and privacy. Before your virtual visit, make sure you are in a space where you can have a private conversation and can give your appointment your full attention. Dress the same way you would if you were coming to the medical center, and schedule your appointment the same way you would if you were coming in person. This means not walking, driving, shopping, or being in a crowded place while you are trying to have a virtual visit. You don't want to be disturbed.

Access tips

If you want to use telehealth but don't have access to a smartphone, laptop, or a good internet connection, there are some ways to get around those limitations.

• Some local libraries may allow you to borrow devices to use at home or in a room in the library.

• Many businesses offer free Wi-Fi, which you can access from your parked car if you're near a space.

• If you need a stronger signal for your virtual visit, try parking on a higher road or in a parking lot where the wireless internet signal is stronger.

• Check with a close friend or family member who has good Wi-Fi and make sure they have a private space in their home where you can connect.

Telehealth options

Virtual visits are a new and exciting option that can make it easier for patients to get the care they need. And there's so much more you can do. You can conduct virtual visits that include peripherals (digital devices designed for telehealth) that you can keep at home. These digital devices can check things like blood pressure and skin rashes. This allows for a more thorough virtual visit with your healthcare provider.
