SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Community members came together Saturday in an effort to fight Type 1 Diabetes.

The JDRF South Dakota One Walk took place at 11 a.m. at Augustana University.

The organisation scaled back after the pandemic but has resumed the fight over the past two years.

The walk serves as a fundraiser and a way to raise awareness about the impact diabetes has on children.

“When my son was diagnosed a few years ago, there wasn't as much education and not as many medical resources as we have today, so I'm trying to get the message out and improve support for people with type 1 diabetes,” said walk participant Lowell Feucht.

“Part of it is building community,” said Jesse Buer, a JDRF member from South Dakota. “We have a big state, so we're just trying to come together and see that there are other people out there like us and connect and not feel alone. We also want to raise awareness of diabetes. Fundraising is a big part of diabetes technology and research that may one day find a cure.”

About 200 people took part in the walk.
