People with diabetes not only need to pay attention to their blood sugar levels, but they also need to pay attention to changes in their feet. This is very important because there is a high risk of developing foot ulcers, which can lead to frequent infections and amputation.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Preventionapproximately 12% of people with diabetes will develop a foot ulcer during their lifetime, and nearly 26 million new foot ulcers occur each year worldwide.

Even though foot symptoms are common in people with diabetes, it can be difficult to know when to see a doctor. Recognizing this, VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital has put together a presentation as part of its Community Out-Reach Education (CORE) series. Dr. Sreenivasul Methikara, an orthopedic surgeon with CMH's Orthopedic Services, will lead a discussion with the community about the potential causes of diabetic foot ulcers, preventive care, and possible treatment options aimed at limb salvage. It is.

“Diabetic foot disease poses a significant global burden, and it is heartbreaking to see how it can lead to chronic health problems and limb loss,” said Methikara, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at VCU School of Medicine. he said. “Through CMH's educational programs, we provide resources and tools to effectively manage diabetes-related foot conditions and prevent amputations by providing patients with the resources and tools to openly discuss their concerns and collaborate with their care team. We hope that by doing so, we can empower patients.”

The CORE Talk will be held on Wednesday, August 28th at 2:30pm in Education Rooms 1114 and 1116 of the CARE Building. The CARE building is located next to the hospital at 1755 N. Mecklenburg Ave. in South Hill. Please let the front desk know that you are coming for a lecture in the education classroom.
