CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Medical Minute is sponsored by Novant Health.

One way to become healthier is to adopt a Mediterranean diet, said Dr. Philip Lee, a cardiologist at Novant Health Heart and Vascular Institute.

Lee said this diet has been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.

“Diet is really a lifestyle, focusing on whole foods, healthy fats like fruits and nuts, and healthy oils, rather than a specific diet,” Lee said.

Another feature is that it is low in total protein and lean meat.
