The New York State Department today announced the completion of a Healthy Living Campus in downtown Batavia as part of the city's $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative Award. Funded by more than $4 million from DRI, this new, state-of-the-art facility provides comprehensive medical and wellness programs for all ages and abilities, contributing to improving the overall health and well-being of the Finger Lakes region. The Healthy Living Center is a 78,500 square foot facility that houses a wellness-based community center and healthcare service partners. The new facility offers modern, bright open spaces perfect for families, including a state-of-the-art fitness center, aquatics center, indoor play area, indoor track, intergenerational reading and education space, community kitchen, and health care provider offices. The new facility will provide a safe space for adults and youth to gather and socialize, increasing the number of youth, seniors and families across the region who use the facility as a recreational and social hub. This project is the result of a collaboration between the Genesee Livingston Orleans Wyoming (GLOW) Regional YMCA and Rochester Regional Health United Memorial Medical Center.

In addition to the $4,075,000 provided by DRI, the project received funding from Empire State Development, the New York State Department of Health, and the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The City of Batavia has been selected as the winner of the 2017 Finger Lakes Region Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) Round 2. Other DRI winners in the region include Geneva, Penn Yan, Seneca Falls, Rochester, Newark, Perry and Waterloo. The Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council is currently reviewing applications for DRI Round 8 awards.

In addition to the Healthy Living Campus, other projects funded by Batavia DRI include:

  • Enhancements to public spaces in Jackson Square.
  • Upgrading buildings in Batavia city center.
  • Restoration of former Carr's department store for mixed-use development. and
  • Creation of a building improvement fund for downtown small businesses and property owners.

The DOS Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) program also funded the city's BOA plan, which covers much of the downtown area served by DRI. The BOA plan identified several DRI projects as priorities.

About the downtown revitalization plan
The Downtown Revitalization Initiative was established in 2016 to accelerate and expand the revitalization of downtowns and neighborhoods in all 10 regions of the state, promoting centers of activity and investment. Led by the Department of State and supported by Empire State Development, Housing and Community Renewal, and NYSERDA, DRI represents an unprecedented and innovative “plan-then-act” strategy that combines strategic planning with immediate implementation. to create a compact and walkable downtown.
