Health is the number one reason why I care about wearables. So I've been wearing an Apple Watch for years. Whether it relates to your training, fitness routine, or the inactive part of the day, I want your watch to monitor as many health parameters as possible.
The wearables have improved significantly over the years, and Apple is leading the pack. The Apple Watch can monitor heart rate (and other cardiac parameters), breathing rate, blood oxygen (outside of the US), wrist temperature, sleep, and more training.
But the Holy Grail is, for me, measuring blood sugar levels throughout the day just as easily as the Apple Watch measures your heart rate. I've been saying it for years, as rumors detail Apple's ongoing issues. Even if you don't have diabetes, you want these features from your watch. I also buy a wearable with these features for my family in this condition.
So it's extremely exciting to hear Samsung mess with the non-invasive blood glucose monitoring capabilities of its own wearables.
Around Android AuthoritySamsung held a Health Forum in San Jose and announced its Galaxy S25 series earlier this week. Samsung's senior vice president, Hong Pak, spoke about Samsung's work on non-invasive blood glucose monitors.
“What I'm really excited about is our team. As you can imagine, we're working on a non-invasive, optically-based continuous glucose monitor,” the executive said. “I can't tell you how long I can [of the launch]but I'm very excited by the progress we're making. This would be a game changer if you made it right. ”
If Samsung is ready to mention such research, he must be confident in achieving this breakthrough. Also, while Samsung may not be ready to say when future Galaxy Watch flagships get their tech, we are sure that rivals, including Apple, have similar release timelines .
Apple Watch Maker is well known for its secrets surrounding its products and features. Apple will not tease work on groundbreaking projects, whether it be non-invasive continuous blood glucose monitoring or anything else. But Samsung is about teasers. In recent years, the company has done that with hardware products such as Android XR headsets, Galaxy Ring, and Galaxy S25 Edge.
However, getting an optical sensor to perform accurate blood glucose levels is more difficult than creating new hardware. None of the companies working on blood glucose monitors like this can make a mistake. This technology is probably needed before releasing FDA approvals. Devices such as the Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch should provide as accurate blood glucose readings as traditional methods.
These methods include stabing the skin with a needle, gathering blood and reading blood sugar levels with a dedicated device.
What game-changer Samsung was invited to include the Galaxy Watch illuminating certain types of light into the skin and collecting data that AI algorithms convert into blood glucose measurements. If Samsung can pull measurements with the Galaxy Ring, that could be an even bigger breakthrough.
Its simplicity can revolutionize how diabetes is treated and prevented, removing the major obstacles that prevent some people from managing their condition as much as possible.
Wearables provide users with continuous data without having to do anything. Similarly, the wearer can respond to information much faster. It's whether it means adjusting your insulin dose to deal with glucose spikes or eating something quickly to prevent crashes.
