STEPHENS POINT, Wisc. (WLUC) – A Wisconsin-based health system strives to make sure those living with diabetes know how to manage the condition properly.
In a press release, Aspirus Health stated that diabetes education programs are proving essential in empowering individuals to make informed choices about nutrition, exercise and medication use.
Cindy Herman, Aspirus Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, says diabetes education is more than just dietary restrictions.
Herman says properly managing diabetes involves taking medication at the correct times, maintaining healthy activity levels and ensuring family members help keep a healthy household.
Herman notes that many patients discover they have not been taking medications correctly, and learning the right approach can significantly improve outcomes.
Family involvement is another cornerstone of effective diabetes management. When households adopt healthier habits together, patients receive stronger support, and children learn preventive behaviors that reduce their own risk of developing diabetes later in life.
“When families walk together, cook together, and learn together, those habits become lifelong,” Herman added. “Education isn’t just about the patient; it’s about building healthier communities.”
Herman says diabetes involves every part of your life.
“So many things that you do or choices that you make affect how well controlled your blood sugars are, which will ultimately help prevent complications later on from developing,” Herman said.
Herman says education programs aim to help those with diabetes learn to take control of the condition.
