Quincy – Diabetes affects 352,000 children and adolescents under the age of 20, affecting 35 per 10,000 youth. Managing juvenile diabetes requires instruction and support from adults in the lives of young people, including teachers.
The Blessing Diabetes Center now offers an online “School Diabetes Care” program to help local teachers, administrators and other school staff learn the basics of managing diabetes issues among students.
The central presence of IS is a short educational video featuring the accreditation of Diabetes Care in Schools, Debra Derhaek, RN, BSN, and Jennifer Frelix, a certified diabetes care and education expert, and Jennifer Frelix, a pharmacist at the Blessed Diabetes Center. This video explains the types of diabetes, common complications of the disease, and how to deal with them.
After watching the video, school staff will answer any post-test questions online. Once completed and passed after the test, school staff will receive an email confirmation and a certificate of completion from the Congratulations Diabetes Center. The school's diabetes care program is not accredited or officially qualified. It is an educational opportunity.
Local school staff are invited to visit blessinghealth.org/diabetescareinschools to view videos and take post-test tests. There is no cost to complete the school's diabetes care program.
