Dad, Dad, Meet your school now – Diabethesdad

The May/June throw and the end of the school year just happened… there's nothing to do… right? I'm wrong! If you (and your child) are not used to the diagnosis of T1D, you might think that summer time is long and schools are at a distance on the horizon, but that's not the case. Know that your school is preparing for a fresh new year. There, so many children grow up like weeds, boys become young men and girls become young women. Summer brings about many changes.

Make sure school staff have “IT” in science and ensure that classrooms and schools ensure that 2025/26 has to bring about what 2025/26 has to bring to your child's success. Now is the time to schedule to talk about your child's grades dealing with new or rather new asterisks in their lives. Diabetes.

You are dealing with one thing, the school deals with 400-800 children at once. Don't think they're all focused on your child. It's not preschool crazy. Your school nurses and teachers may have a little time to pay the necessary attention without millions of other distractions……it will change soon.

There are many plans to help your child like the 504 plan and many other possibilities. Talk about them now. There are many examples of 504 plans, and are familiar with them as they are ready to create a proper plan for children who remember that these plans are not only obvious plans but also for those who are not scheduled.

Often, when Caitlyn started school, they shared that they knew what was in the store as moms and kids got on the bus the day before their first day. With over 20 stops to unload the kids, it was certainly fortunate that Kaitlyn's stop was the first in the morning and the first to get off and off. But that wasn't what happened on the first day. The bus driver came early and no one was waiting, so they decided to just drop all the kids off and come back first. 90 minutes later the bus returned with a load of hysterically crying children as the bus had not been done as taught the day before. Caitlin's blood sugar level was confusing so no one knew where the bus was, so did all his family members too. What I didn't know about before the call was just a scary thing. There was no plan. By school. By us.

We then decided that every scenario would be laid out because it was not just for the plan in which all possible scenarios were in place, but also for course events that were unlikely to affect the child. That became our rule. And every year, with a binder in hand, we met with school officials and school nurses. With a polite, knowledgeable and humble heart, we thanked them for their special attention.

In our lifetime, insulin pumps have become today's device from the size of an astronaut's backpack. Imagine being with school staff members astonishing and tears when a year-old nurse asks if she can wear an insulin pump for a week, experiencing everything Caitlin was going through, and it would be much more helpful for all children who have the “same asterisk” with Caitlin. After more than 35 years, you can tell me that you remember Mrs. Brandy.

Takeout here is to go ahead of the curve, so that your meeting is not an experience decorated at the last moment. Thank you for meeting you more than anything, prepare your advice and answer any questions they may have. Make them your partner, you're happy what you did. We certainly did.
