SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Dogs Inc is launching a new program to train service dogs for people with Type 1 diabetes.
The service dogs will detect high or low blood sugar levels in their human partners and alert them to these changes. The dogs will also be trained to perform other tasks, including retrieving medical kits.
Training and capabilities
The dogs can alert people to blood sugar changes 20 to 30 minutes before medical technology detects the changes, according to Santos. The service dogs work alongside existing medical technology rather than replacing it.
Training begins when the dogs are two days old. Expert instructors spend thousands of hours building the dogs’ confidence and advanced skills through positive reinforcement.
By the time the dogs are matched with recipients, they have mastered specialized skills, including identifying dangerous blood glucose changes and fetching medical supplies.
How to participate
Adults with Type 1 diabetes who live within driving distance of the Dogs Inc campus can sign up to become scent sample participants. The organization provides all necessary supplies and keeps participants’ information confidential. The samples are used to help train the dogs.
Recipients of the service dogs will also receive Dogs Inc alumni benefits.
