BOSTON – Eating more avocados may help women stave off type 2 diabetes, a new study finds.

Avocados contain antioxidants that reduce inflammation and cell damage, which can increase your risk of chronic diseases. It's also rich in fat and fiber and doesn't cause glucose or insulin spikes.

in this researcha team of researchers, including two from the Avocado Nutrition Center, analyzed dietary information for more than 25,000 Mexican adults.

The researchers found that women who ate avocados had a 22-29% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The same protective effect was not observed in men, and the reason is not clear. However, hormonal changes throughout a woman's life may contribute.

Eating avocados alone does not necessarily prevent diabetes. Diet experts say you should consider incorporating avocados into your already healthy diet instead.
