HUDSON VALLEY- Communities nationwide observe Diabetes Awareness Month in November, a time dedicated to raising awareness of the more than 38 million Americans living with diabetes and the millions more who are at risk.
Here in the Hudson Valley, the month carries special significance with local health providers and advocacy groups pushing efforts to tailor education, prevention, and support to the region’s residents.
In Dutchess County, Northern Dutchess Hospital is offering a free National Diabetes Prevention Program for people who are at elevated risk of type 2 diabetes. The program combines lifestyle coaching, nutrition counselling and peer support.
In Orange and Ulster counties, the HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley Diabetes Education Center runs weekly self-management classes, monthly support groups, and education programs for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes, especially type 2, is strongly influenced by diet, physical activity, access to education, and broader social-health factors. According to doctors, prevention and self-management programs help reduce complications such as cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, and kidney disease, which in turn reduce strain on health systems and improve quality of life.
