Tribal nations looking to fund youth summer camps are in luck. This week, the American Indian Affairs Association announced grants to support summer vacation programs for Native children.

Since 2003, the association has awarded $240,000 to 180 camps with programs ranging from language and cultural preservation to diabetes education to youth health and wellness education.

“Our summer camp grants will help us realize our vision of creating a world where the diverse cultures and values ​​of indigenous peoples live, are protected and respected,” the association’s chief executive said. said Shannon O’Loughlin, Managing Director (Choctaw Nation). They are connected to their culture and experience better mental and emotional health, which is essential to maintaining strong Indigenous cultures and protecting Indigenous sovereignty. ”

Grant applications will be evaluated based on programming, inclusivity, support for LGBTQ2S+ youth, education on diabetes prevention, nutrition, physical fitness, cultural knowledge, language preservation, and community advocacy. All programs must include Native Elders.

The application period is from March 18th to May 1st.
