SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Governor JB Pritzker signed a bill Monday to help students and families better understand the signs and symptoms of Type 1 diabetes.
The Illinois State Board of Education, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Public Health, will develop informational resources about the disease and make them available online. Public and charter schools will also post this information on their websites.
Sponsors said more than 30,000 children across the country have type 1 diabetes, yet many children and their families are unaware of the symptoms or treatment.
“As more children develop the predisposing factors for type 1 diabetes, it's important that kids and their parents are more aware of the warning signs, contact their doctor and take action if necessary,” said Rep. Michelle Massman (D-Schaumburg).
Information materials should include an explanation of the type 1 diabetes screening process and the meaning of test results.
Sen. Elzie Sims (D-Chicago) said: Law It can be a lifeline to give kids guidance toward better self-care and resilience.
“When a child is diagnosed with diabetes, parents are often anxious and unsure of where to turn,” says Sims. “Having a one-stop service for education and treatment options can be a great help in navigating the unknown.”
Senate Bill 3473 took effect immediately.
