Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels play an important role in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and serve as a key indicator of an individual's glycemic control. The Endocrine Society has outlined specific her HbA1c target ranges for older adults (age 65 and older) based on an individual's health status (good, fair, or poor).

a Retrospective cohort study The study, conducted by researchers at Yale School of Medicine, the University of Chicago, and Kaiser Permanente, looked at an individual's risk of complications based on their HbA1c level. The paper is Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

This study compared outcomes for older adults with HbA1c within and outside the recommended target range while taking insulin or sulfonylureas, drugs that increase the risk of hypoglycemic reactions.

This study found that healthy older adults are at increased risk of complications when HbA1c is below or above the target range, supporting current recommendations. In contrast, people in poor health had a much higher risk of complications than healthy people, but the risk did not change depending on whether HbA1c was within or outside the target range.

This study highlights the importance of proper blood sugar control for healthy people and suggests that tighter blood sugar control for people in poor health may not help reduce the risk of complications. Suggests.
