YARMOUTH (WGME) — A Maine boy has another way to help manage his type 1 diabetes and a new companion.

American Diabetic Dogs arrived from Las Vegas on Thursday with a 6-month-old yellow research dog.

The puppy has been trained to alert the Merrill family to their son’s blood sugar levels.

The family says they want to raise awareness about type 1 diabetes.

They are also working to provide more resources to other families in Maine.
