OH launches childhood diabetes support group

Owensboro Health has launched a pediatric diabetes support group at Health Park, a monthly gathering aimed at providing support, education and community for children with Type 1 diabetes. People with diabetes and their caregivers.

“The Juvenile Diabetes Support Group was established in response to a direct request from local families,” Ohio officials said in a release. “In May, a school guidance counselor highlighted the need for a support network for families affected by juvenile diabetes. Owensboro Health diabetes educators and dietitians Melissa Gaither, Jenny Young and Shelby Shelby enthusiastically answered the call, organizing the first meeting and providing valuable support to participating families.”

Gaither said managing Type 1 diabetes is a daunting task, especially for young children and their families.

“The group provides an important sense of belonging so both children and parents know they're not alone,” she said. “We want to create a community where families feel heard and supported, and a place where they can find the resources they need in Owensboro.”

Upcoming meeting dates for the support group are July 16, Aug. 20 and Sept. 17. Meetings will be held in Healthpark Classroom B at 5 p.m.

“Each session blends social interaction with education, allowing children to interact with peers who understand their challenges while parents share tips and receive important information,” Gaither said.

At the July 16 meeting, mental health counselors will be available to address children's concerns and questions, and on Aug. 20, a speaker from the school system will speak about 504 plans, which address safety and support for children with medical needs at school.

Families interested in participating in the support group can register by contacting Young at 270-688-4858. Sessions are free and open to all.
