MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – A U.P. hospital is trying to keep everyone educated about the risks of diabetes ahead of Thanksgiving.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. To bring the month to a close, U.P. Health Systems-Marquette hosted an educational booth on the warning signs of diabetes.

Folks could learn tips to prevent and identify the condition. Some diabetes warning signs are excessive thirst, hunger, frequent urination and fatigue.

The diabetes educators at the booth say sometimes there aren’t any signs, so it’s important to have regular checkups.

“You want to have a primary care provider, you want to make sure you’re getting routine checkups, you really want to know your family history and know your risks, and then ask questions and just don’t be afraid,” said Sarah Zimmerman, a UPHS-Marquette Nurse and Diabetes Educator.

The booth was only up on Tuesday, but there are plenty of resources available on the UPHS-Marquette website, as well as on the American Diabetes Association website.
