VICTORIA, Texas — Health educators are using American Diabetes Alert Day to highlight the critical role that proper snacking plays in managing blood sugar levels and preventing diabetes complications.
Kelly Hetherington, a registered nurse and health educator at the Texas A&M Health Coastal Bend Health Education Center, said healthy snacking strategies can make a significant difference in blood sugar management throughout the day.
The emphasis on healthy snacking comes as millions of Americans live with diabetes or prediabetes, conditions that require careful attention to diet and blood sugar monitoring. American Diabetes Alert Day serves as an annual reminder for people to assess their risk factors and take preventive measures.
The Texas A&M Health Coastal Bend Health Education Center is taking an active role in community diabetes education by offering practical demonstrations and screenings. The center will host a family night event on Tuesday, March 31, starting at 6 p.m., featuring food demonstrations designed to show families how to prepare diabetes-friendly meals and snacks.
In addition to the evening program, A1C screenings will be available between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday. A1C tests measure average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months and are a key tool in diabetes diagnosis and management.
Community members interested in attending Tuesday’s diabetes education family night can call 361-226-4016 to RSVP. The center encourages families to participate together, as diabetes management often involves lifestyle changes that affect entire households.
The free programming represents part of a broader effort to address diabetes prevention and management in the Coastal Bend region, where access to healthcare education can make a significant difference in community health outcomes.
